I had sinus surgery at Zen Clinic in Westlake Village Ca. on Monday, October 18, 2021. Dr. Alen Cohen performed the surgery and did an exellent job. However, my anesthesiolgist was Dr. Paul Weir. I tried to tell him before surgery that I have had 25 other surgeries in my life and that I have allergies and can get very sick from the drugs. WEll, he knew it all and never really looked at me, simply telling me that he would mix up a cocktail. My last words were "I guess I am in your hand". I don't remember awaking, getting dressed, going home. I laid down at home and slept for a couple of hours and awoke to total lose of my bladder. Soaked in urine and feeling very drugged and out of it. The rest of the day, I went to the bathroom about every hour and urinated a quart each time. I became totally dehydrated and had no control of my bladder. I have previously had no bladder problems. I awoke the next morning, after a miserable night, to hives which I had for three days. I never heard from him for nine days. He made a simple one hour surgery into a nightmare experience for me.
My strong suggestion is to never let this doctor near you.

Dr. Weir answered all my questions regarding the nerve block for my scheduled rotator cuff repair and was genuinely concerned about using the latest, state of the art techniques to ensure that the nerve block would be as long-lasting as possible. It turned out that, following surgery, I was pain free for 26 hours until it was time to switch to pain medications.

In the operating room, Dr. Weir was skillful and reassuring. Post-surgery, he regularly checked my recovery until he was confident that I could be safely discharged.

I never knew that one could put in a request for a particular anesthesiologist but surgery centers will accommodate such special requests if feasible. I'm glad I did my homework. I e-mailed Dr. Weir a couple of days before surgery and he was very detailed in his explanations of what he was going to do and what medications he would be administering. He followed up on my e-mails with a phone call the day before surgery and, once again, was very reassuring and informative.
