Kaiser is an over-bloated bureaucracy. I'm still waiting for them to find my file and call me back so that I can simply schedule an appointment for a crown that has been on my treatment plan for over a year. They say they lost my file and can't figure out how to go confirm my treatment plan with my dentist. So here I sit waiting and waiting for them to find my file and call me back. I called Tuesday morning and just called again this morning. Also, I had to go to an outside dentist to get a timely emergency appointment that took the outside dentist about 1 minute of his time and the assistant about 5 minutes of her time. But Kaiser couldn't get me in even though I was in excruciating pain. I also had to go to an outside specialist for the root canal. The outside dentist gave me a payment plan for the treatment. Kaiser would not give me a payment plan. Also, the outside dentist checked my credit and gave me $3K credit for my treatment plan in 5 minutes. Kaiser made me wait 5 days for an answer, even though the root canal was urgent. I could go on - but these HMOs spend more time on their paper work and own personnel trying to prevent spending money on your care than they actually spend taking care of you. Don't get me wrong, the staff are all very nice. I don't think it is their fault that the Kaiser system is so screwed up.

Kaiser Permanente Dental Office has professional dentists, assistants, and hygienists. However, the wait time for appointments is terribly long, as is the wait time getting in and out of the dentist, and the wait time on hold with their clinic. To schedule and reschedule appointments for myself and my children, became very difficult, and as a result, getting into the dentist regularly became difficult. If you don't mind scheduling all cleanings over three months ahead of time and not getting into to see your regular hygienist and you don't mind having to pay extra if and when you need a rush appointment for other dental needs, then Kaiser might be a good fit for you. The bureaucracy, not the providers are my main complaint.

It's Kaiser, so it's impersonal -- it's a big clinic and while most of the dentists are fine, the hygenist actually stopped my cleaning to take personal calls! The facility is clean though. My major complaint (and it's really genuinely annoying) is that when I have finished my appointment -- I can't simply pay and go -- they have you sit down in the waiting room again and wait to be called up by them in order to pay your bill and schedule follow-ups. More than once they have accidentally filed my paperwork before calling me up -- effectively leaving me sitting endlessly waiting for them to call me when they have no idea I'm there. Both times when I asked them how much longer I'd have to wait-- they've said (somewhat impatiently) it will just be a few more minutes. Well the first time I waited over an HOUR! I asked them "how much longer twice during that time -- when I got to an hour and fiftteen minutes of waiting, I was livid and said "Look I have to leave, can you just bill me?" and only THEN did they take the time to realize that they didn't have my file in their pile to process -- it had been refiled. Absolutely ludicrous!

The second time it happened I had waited 30 minutes so I just flat out asked them if they had my file back there -- they didn't. Seriously, there should be a better way.

The typical wait to pay and go is 20 minutes and even that seems long to me -- it's just...inefficient all around. Frankly if I've taken time out of work, when the dentist finishes -- I need to go on my way! Payment shouldn't take that long.
