He grew up in Springfield and was an All-American soccer player at Missouri State University. He graduated number one in his class from the University of Kansas Medical School and went on to complete his orthopedic surgery residency at Mayo Clinic. He was awarded the Clinical Competency Award by the Mayo Clinic upon graduation. He completed a fellowship in sports medicine at The Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colorado. He has cared for multiple professional and Olympic athletes.
