Donna Waddell, Certified Grief Recovery Specialist

Dr. Donna Waddell, RN and Certified Grief Recovery Specialist began her practice in Pickens County in 2014. She moved to Rome in 2017 and is starting to offer her services in the Northwest Georgia area. Her mission is to create a safe space where people can learn to take small, correct actions so they will be relieved of the emotional pain caused by grief, able to live in the moment, and envision their future.

The Grief Recovery Method was developed by John James and Russell Friedman who established The Grief Recovery Institute. The Grief Recovery Method has been successfully used for more than 35 years. Support groups are held on every continent in the world and The Grief Recovery Handbook has been translated into 22 languages.

Are you following the suggestions given by others and still struggling? Does it seem like your grief will last forever? Have you tried replacing the loss? The Grief Recovery Method will help you.

Grief is the normal and natural human response to significant emotional loss of any kind. Grief is the conflicting emotions one experiences in response to a change or end of a familiar pattern of behavior, such as death, divorce, moving, retirement, graduation and 40 other major life events. Grief is individual and unique. Most of the "help" offered by society doesn't really address what grievers are experiencing. Grievers have broken hearts, but are offered intellectual solutions. The Grief Recovery Method Support Group provides a safe environment for exploring the normal feelings associated with grief.

The Grief Recovery Method Support Group is a transformative experience. This 8-week class enables you to acquire the necessary tools to complete unfinished emotional "business." First, participants unlearn some myths surrounding grief, such as “time heals all wounds”, "keep busy," and “replace the loss.” Participants examine what we’ve all been socially conditioned to believe we should do and why it doesn’t work. Then, they examine the usual “helpful” statements we often hear and why they are not helpful. Finally, participants learn the simple steps to let go of all the things that keep people trapped in the pain of loss and grief.

Recovery means feeling better, savoring fond memories without the pain, and having a future with hope. Many have said that this 8 week class changed their lives.

If you feel stuck and have tried counseling, other grief support groups, staying busy, and still feel overwhelmed with feelings of sadness and loss, then this is the group for you!

The Grief Recovery Method works when other measures do not. The success of this program has been demonstrated over and over, both here in the United States as well as other continents.

Services "Grievers do not lack courage or willingness. What they lack is helpful information and correct choices." John James, founder of The Grief Recovery Institute.

There are six myths about grief that are so common that nearly everyone recognizes them. We rarely question this misinformation and then we wonder why we are not feeling better. These myths include: time heals all wounds, grieve alone, be strong (for others?), don't' feel bad, replace the loss, and keep busy.

The Grief Recovery Method: Grief Support Group - This is an 8 week class which meets once a week. Currently support groups meet on Tuesday evenings at North Broad Baptist Church, 1309 N. Broad St., Rome, GA. You must be registered to participate. This is not a casual drop-in group. The text for the group activities is The Grief Recovery Handbook. 20th Anniversary edition.

The Grief Recovery Method: Individual 1:1 Meet with Dr Waddell for an hour once a week for 7 weeks. If you want to begin the Recovery process now, instead of waiting for a group to begin, then you can choose the 1:1 approach. Dr. Waddell can meet with you on the day and at the time of your choosing. The text on which the sessions are based is The Grief Recovery Handbook. 20th Anniversary edition.

When Children Grieve: Helping Children Deal with Loss - a class for parents or other caregivers. Many people think that children are resilient and will bounce back from loss. Others think that children should be protected from loss. Which is it?

WCG meets for 2 hours once a week for 6 weeks. This class is perfect for those who want to teach their children how to effectively deal with loss. Not only does this enable the participant to help their child with a current, painful loss, but also results in the child acquiring the tools for effectively dealing with loss for the rest of their lives! What a wonderful gift to give to your child.
