I have been to this veterinary clinic before (10+ years ago) and their customer service was good. My daughter's dog was hit by a car. He is very lucky that the road was icy and he slid instead of being drug over gravel otherwise he would be dead. His visible injuries consisted of a badly split lip and some minor contusions on his right rear leg. He looked remarkably well for having been hit hard by a car. The day after the incident he had trouble standing on his back legs so I called our vet(our vet is not at the fairview clinic). After explaining our dog's symptoms over the phone our vet believed that he had some neurological issues from shock to the spinal cord and there may be some minor fractures in his pelvic bone but no complete breaks. Due to the nature of these injuries the only treatment necessary is bed rest with limited activity along with meds to help with discomfort and reduce swelling. Just to be safe, he wanted him X-Rayed to make sure there wasn't a more serious problem being overlooked. Since he himself does not have an X-Ray machine in his possession he suggested that we go to another clinic to get him X-Rayed and then bring him the X-Rays along with the dog. This is how we ended up at the Fairview Animal Hospital. Over the phone I was told they would do this for me and the cost would be between $150 - $200 depending on the number of X-Rays. I showed up at our scheduled time and after waiting for 30 minutes they too the dog back and examined him without me in the room with him(this was the first time I experienced that most times the owner is there to help keep the animal calm). After I guess they had completed a initial exam the vet came in and immediately started to explained that they are different then other clinics in that they practice complete care and that they would have to fully anesthetized the dog to take X-Rays. This fully knocking out of the animal was to protect his staff and to get quality X-Rays(poppycock!!!). Then he said the nurse would be in with my estimate. So now I am on alert, why can't he explain his costs and how they break down. The nurse was, as if on cue, right outside the door to the room with paperwork in hand. She lays out in front of me a very organized documentsm ent that lists outd three options 1-do nothing cost $ for office visit, 2-send him home with medications cost $120 (she implied that by choosing this option that I would be making the dog suffer needlessly). & 3-complete care which included the X-Rays cost $760-$900. I think my eyes popped out of my head. You have to be kidding me. So I originally asked for basic X-Rays that I could take to my long-time vet. They said sure at a cost of $150-$200. Now that I am there with an injured dog they played on my emotions and tried to up sell me unnecessary, costly services. The Ol'e bait and switch. Of course, I refused the service. But since I did refuse, they had to try one last time to guilt me into the services. They made me sign the quote/estimate stating that I am refusing treatment for a suffering animal. So the end of my tale: I called the Waterford Animal Hospital located on the main drag in Waterford PA. They fit me in to a packed schedule that same day. They took three X-Rays without having to anesthetize my dog at all, cost $129 out the door. One of their vets actually took a moment to tell me his opinion on what he saw in the X-Rays free of charge. I beat feet over to my vet X-Rays in hand. He reviewed them and confirmed that he there was hairline fracture on his pelvic bone. He prescribed bed rest and minimal activity for 6-8 weeks. Bayer Asprin twice a day for pain and swelling, cost $0.00 out the door. My dog is resting and doing fine. So be careful out there because there is a trends in the veterinarian world where the main focus is solely on profit with an eye to selling unnecessary services and brand name medications without any concern for customers pocket book. I do not begrudge anyone from trying to make money just not in what I consider to be at someone else's expense. There are still good Veterinarians, clinics, and hospitals out there but more and more I see to many of the other kind. One last observation I had is that while I was at the Fairview Vet approximately 2 hours no other customers where there when I got there, none came in while I waited, none showed up on my way out and the whole time I was there the phone did not ring once. As opposed to my observations while I was at the Waterford Veterinarian hospital and my Veterinarian' s clinic: customers were coming and going and their phones were ringing off the hook.
