As a foster parent I have met many counselors. All well meaning and educated. All hoping to help make a change for the better in these children who have been abused, neglected and all but cast aside in and out of the system. Stacey Barnhill is like no other. Soft spoken, witty, quick to smile and laugh and gentle in her appearance and manner. She exudes a sense of safety for parents and children alike. Her office is filled to the brim with fascinating toys, thousands of figures, a sand box and much more for a child to explore. All tools of her trade. Soon, a child is telling his/her story through figurines in the sand box. A story the child has been urged to tell but refused to. But in the safety of Ms. Barnhill's office the child can tell her truth and begin the healing process, finally. What a moment to witness! Something I had always held out hope for but never really thought I would see myself firsthand. Ms. Barnhill has the credentials and the degrees and diplomas, this is true. But you cannot teach deep understanding and commitment to children and the families that love them. You cannot teach decency of character. Nor can you teach devotion to the betterment of all people. You can only hope for that. I have great respect for Ms. Barnhill. The patience she showed me while I worked through issues with children will never be forgotten. I will be forever grateful for myself and for the children who's lives she touched and made better.
