Hip pain, the bind we often find ourselves in (in the DME business--I'm not speaking for Robinson's) is when a customer walks in with a prescription that is not enough. We need patient demographics, insurance information, chart notes (with an appropriate date and including information such as length of need, how the patient will benefit from the item, and why another less expensive item would not be satisfactory), and a diagnosis. We don't ask for this information for our entertainment; Medicare requires it. If we don't have the information we need, we don't get paid for your item. As a business it doesn't make sense to dispense something if we don't know we will be paid for it, now does it?
Usually when a Medicare patient comes in with a prescription for durable medical equipment, they will not be leaving with it that day. Hip pain, I can almost guarantee the doctor had to fax Robinson's four times because the clerk faxed them first asking for information which should have been provided in the first place.
Another thing that doesn't help is that employees at doctors' offices actually tell patients that the prescription has been faxed over and their wheelchair (or whatever) should be ready by the time they get there. Uh, hello?? Even if you have faxed over complete information (this happens with about 2% of prescriptions), is your patient the only person the DME store is helping that day? I think not!

Require ridiculous amounts of paperwork before giving any items even with a Dr. prescription. My doctor had to fax 4 times and they still would not give a wheelchair. Clerk we dealt with was upset because she was hoping to leave early. We never got the wheelchair. Very disappointed
