My mom and I had been wanting to get our hair cut and since we are new in town we didn't know where to go. We figured JCP would be a good place to go because they accept walk-ins and it was a spur the moment decision to just do it. I brought pictures of myself with a short style that I've had before and like very much and when she asked what I wanted to do and I mentioned that I brought pictures of myself to give her an idea of what I wanted she sighed and rolled her eyes at me. I had just sat down; this appointment was not off to a good start at all. After I told her what I wanted she told me that we would discuss it once she shampooed my hair and she could see the length. First of all, we had already discussed what I wanted, and secondly, my hair is stick straight and wasn't in an up-do so there was no need for her to wet my hair to see the length. She took forever to shampoo and condition my hair- shampooed it twice before she conditioned it. So after washing my hair for what felt like 10 minutes, she brought me back to the chair and tried to talk me out of the layered look I wanted and into a style she called a "box cut," which is simply cut straight all the way around. I wanted the back slightly shorter than the front and I wanted it layered, but she gave me a choppy wedge- instead of being nice and rounded it looks like someone took a bite out of the back of my hair (when looking at it from the side). Throughout the haircut I could feel her hands shaking every time she touched my hair as if I was her first client ever and had no idea what to do with me. She started in the back and moved around to the left side and then cut the right side, but she kept coming back to the same spots in the back and on the left to the point that the left side kept getting shorter and shorter. At one point the left side was at least 1/2 of an inch shorter than the right side. It is much shorter than I initially wanted it and its still lopsided. She assured me that she would go back over it once she had dried it to "clean it up." I have never had a stylist tell me that nor have they ever had to do this. This was the first ever trip to a JCP salon and will be the last. Now to cut my bangs, she brushed my hair into my face and asked me where she should cut them. Without touching my hair at all she took the scissors to my hair and just decided to cut them like she'd never been instructed how to cut bangs- also have never had my bangs cut this way. (Look, Ma! No hands!) When it came to styling, I wouldn't call it styling anyway, she sprayed some sort of liquid at the roots of my hair only on the top of my head and sprayed so much product that I felt it start to run down my scalp. She added to this mousse all over and heavily sprayed my hair with something to make my hair shiny. I don't like to put any product in my hair in the first place. I have fine but thick hair so too much of any product can make it look greasy. She blew it dry, though the haircut took so long it was already drying everywhere, and then took a flat iron to my hair to try and curl my bangs and the rest of it. She never showed me the back, not once. And true to her word she went back to my hair (once it was dry and styled) with her scissors to "fix it up." She, I think was pretty proud of her work because she kept saying it looks good. I didn't have the heart to tell her I didn't like it, she already seemed fragile with her shaky hands. I thanked her anyway. I was embarrassed to walk out in public with my hair looking as it was and when I joined up with my mom and we swapped our experiences it turned out that we had the same experience from two separate "stylists." I felt ugly, never have I felt ugly after a haircut, and I've had some that were less than flattering, but this one takes the cake. I'm not one to cry over cutting my hair, I'm usually so trusting of my stylist that I tell them the general direction I want to go and then give them the freedom to do what they have been trained to do, but when I got home I finally looked at the back of the haircut saw that it was worse than I even thought it was. I immediately started to wash my hair to get all that product out; it took two washes and I could still smell it on me. That same afternoon, I called and made an appointment with a Day Spa and Salon in town that has only rave reviews, and hopefully they can correct this haircut. The last thing I'll say is this; the website for JCP Salon boasts that "Top professionals in the industry train JCPenny Salon Associates on the latest trends and techniques." If these people really are trained by "top professionals," there's a problem. And if I were one of those "top professionals" who trained this particular stylist I would be embarrassed to have my name associated with her; she is a direct representation of the training she (and they as a store) received and is not making a good impression on behalf of those "top professionals." I will seriously discourage anyone who asks about JCP Salon, and strongly encourage them to go elsewhere, where they can get a much better cut and style at the same price.
