About

John Caruso, MD

Dr Caruso has been in practice in western Maryland and the Quad-state region for 20 years. He was trained by Dr Ed Benzel, now of the Cleveland Clinic, and a pioneer in spine biomechanics. Dr Caruso's practice includes taking care of complex spinal traumatic, degenerative, and oncological conditions, as well as using state-of-the-art minimally invasive techniques. He has championed the natural extension to outpatient spine centers for a better patient experience. He is consistently recognized as a "Top Spine Surgeon to Know" in the US for many years in Becker's Spine Review of Chicago. He has organized local, regional, and national efforts to keep trauma centers open and retain well trained neurosurgeons in the community through legislative activism and tort reform focuses. He has been a long time officer in the Maryland Neurosurgical Society, having served as it's President. As a long standing managing partner and founder of an integrated multi-specialty group, Dr Caruso has just left that group in July, 2016, and opened "Parkway Brain and Spine". This new venture always him to get back to the basic fundamentals of good patient care and to better enhance a patient's experience through the often confusing and frightening process of spinal problems. His focus is to provide patients with education, understanding, and honest opinions about their condition and to explore all non-surgical options before any surgery is considered.

Every time I come here they always remember me by name and greet me as soon as I walk in the door, even if it's been months since my last appointment. They are so thoughtful and amazingly sweet, I just love this place. Their prices were very fair. The level of care you get for the price is outstanding. The one thing that I really enjoy about this place is their high level of customer service. Their full attention is always on me and they never take personal calls during my appointment. I've been to other places that answer their phone and it just drives me crazy.

After having tried physical therapy, chiropractic, TENS sessions, epidural and spinal nerve blocks, my pain was not any better but Dr. Caruso still released me from his care and cleared me for return to work despite the fact that I could not stand for more than 5 minutes before I was in intense pain. His response was that he wasnt going to operate so he was done with me. He referred me back to the pain specialist who gave me yet another injection which again did nothing for my pain. Since my release, I have had multiple nerve burnings (radiofrequency neuroablation) and the pain is still there. I requested to see another Dr. in Caruso's practice and they refused to switch drs for me.
In a nutshell, I have been in pain for over a year but because I am not incontinent, Dr. Caruso refused to operate. The lack of care and direction from this doctor is unacceptable. I would tell anyone to steer clear of Parkway Neuroscience and Dr. Caruso. He is interested in making money and if he isn't going to get money from operating on you, he isn't interested in treating you.
