About

Philip R Downer, MD

Dr. Downer is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with a special interest in hip and knee preservation surgery.

Dr. Downer enjoys seeing patients of all ages, but his special interest in joint preservation has led him to treat many younger patients with hip problems, such as hip dysplasia or hip impingement. One of only a few surgeons in the Pacific Northwest who performs hip arthroscopies for these issues, Dr. Downer has quickly become one of Seattles leading hip specialists.
In addition to joint preservation, Dr. Downer treats patients with more advanced complications. He performs over 250 hip replacements per year, primarily through the tissue sparing surgery approach.

Dr. Downer completed a medical degree and residency at Memorial University Medical School in Canada, and went on to complete a fellowship in pelvic osteotomies and complex joint reconstruction in Bern, Switzerland. Continuing education is important to Dr. Downer; in his spare time, he seeks out and visits other surgeons doing similar work all over the world. In addition to his medical training, Dr. Downer holds a Masters in Business Administration from INSEAD, one of Europes top business schools, and ranked 5th worldwide.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Downer enjoys spending time with his wife and two children. He also likes to kite surf, wind surf, and back country ski.

When you see a doctor, there should never come a time for you to weigh the success of your surgery against the dignity afforded to you. It should never come into question, however, it did for me. Patients have the right be treated with human dignity and respect. Patients have the right to actively participate in their own medical treatment. Really, these are two rights you should pay attention to when you visit Dr. Downer. What's confusing is I don't get the sense that he knows when he violates these rights. That's the fallibility of a doctor who is perfect most of the time and so gives off the air that he might not care what you think because he's somewhat untouchable for the average Joe. His work is superior and recovery time for patients, beyond compare. The question is can you handle his dismissive behavior? Keep in mind that he's a mechanics man. He's still human and a top-notch doctor. I am still grateful. This is sad for me to say because I once liked him: when you're done, just walk away.
