Parents of UW-Stout Athletes need to be aware that Dr. Paul McNally sees UW-Stout Athletes on campus at the request of trainers that work there. My daughter was having leg pain issues. Dr. Paul McNally told her she should have further tests on her leg immediately & referred her to the Red Cedar Medical Center to have this test. Our daughter was never told at anytime by anyone that she was having an expensive test. She thought she was having an X-ray done, but in fact he signed her up for a MRI. The clinic asked her if she had insurance. She said yes & they said that was good. Recently, like most families, we no longer have access to comprehensive insurance coverage through work. We & our daughter only have catastrophic insurance which does not cover this procedure. She was billed $3,347.52. We had no clue that she had this test done until we received an insurance rejection letter. We contacted the medical center for clarification, for an explanation, & we also researched what an MRI would cost in our area (Green Bay) or in Eau Claire (30 mins away.) We were shocked to find out that she could have had the same MRI performed for $1,350 at numerous locations. We were told by the Red Cedar Medical Financial staff that all she needed to do was to file for financial aid. Unfortunately we were also told that since she was claimed as our dependent that we would have to provide our tax information. We asked what the financial aid quidelines are & we were told that would not be disclosed other than it was related to federal definition of poverty. We explained that our income is higher, but we have 2 kids in college & $37,000 worth of uncovered dental bills for the same daughter. We tried to reason with the Medical Director & the financial staff over an extended period of time in hope they would reduce the cost to a reasonable & customary price. The ending to this cautionary tale is that our daughter is on the hook for $3,347.52 as a freshman in college for a test that should have cost $1,350 because Dr. Paul McNally & the Red Cedar Medical Center took advantage of a naive college freshman in pain & scared her into having this procedure done at a facility that is not cost effective.
