My MD recommended that I get a sleep study. I chose Shawnee Mission because generally, I have found it to be a good hospital. NOT SO for the Sleep Center. My regular MD is not a sleep specialist, so he wanted a sleep study done by a specialist. After the study, I contacted my MD to schedule an appointment. He said I should see the doctor that interpreted the study. I called the office of Michael Nelson, where the interpretation was done, to schedule an appointment. They called back -- a week later.

An obnoxious scheduler called back and asked why I was trying to schedule an appointment. After I explained that my MD said that I should schedule an appointment with the specialist who interpreted the study. She then asked "Did he refer you to us?" I again stated that My MD said I should see the MD who interpreted the study results and that my understanding was that Dr. Nelson interpreted the study. She then said, 'He did but that's all he does. Did your doctor refer you to us?"

A bit frustrated by this time, I said, "I don't know how else to say it."

She then said, "I'm going to have to refer you back to your doctor."

Don't go to Shawnee Mission unless you want a run around and an abdication of responsibility. Or, unless your MD is a sleep specialist--but then why do you need Dr. Nelson at all?

I was completely at ease during my appointment here. They went to great lengths to make sure I was completely relaxed and comfortable the entire time. One thing I really appreciated about their office, was how neat and clean it was. I could tell they wanted to create a comfortable environment for their patients. They didn't leave me unattended for that long during my appointment, but it was still a little frustrating. I wish they had been more attentive. They were one of the kindest, most caring staff I've ever dealt with. It didn't matter how many times I called with a question or concern, they were always happy to help me. I liked that they explained my treatment's risks and benefits thoroughly. I felt much more informed.
