If you need an opinion on whether or not to have spinal fusion, do NOT see Dr. Hambly. My appointment was a huge disappointment and waste of time. He will tell you surgery is YOUR choice (he refused to even offer an opinion on my situation, which was the purpose of the appointment). He did not say, "Yes, you would benefit from fusion," OR "No, you would not." He would not commit either way which left me dumbfounded. He was noncomittal and had a very blase disposition. He will also tell you 80% of surgeries are successful. That was useful information, until he condescendingly added, "Take that information and do what you want with it." He provided absolutely value, aside from the brief tutorial on how bad my MRI was! Meanwhole, two other surgeons said I was a perfect candidate for fusion - one indicating Hambly was the "best." This gave me hope. I was excited about gaining clarity and making a smart choice on my health. Hambly, however, repeated, "I never tell my patients what to do." I left wondering what the point was of seeing him. I needed an expert, educated opinion. He wouldn't give it. I will be much more comfortable going to San Francisco or Stanford and talking with someone who's willing to, at the very least, have an opinion. His only redeeming quality was that he was about 20 minutes late for the appointment which is "on-time" nowadays - even though, as I waited, I listened to his entire converation about moving to a state where he wouldn't have to pay income taxes. Maybe the fact that he's a "pain management specialist" means he'd rather fill you with pain killers and the coffers of drug companies than actually solve your problem. I highly recommend seeing someone else if you need advice on how to proceed with back pain. I truly wish I didn't have to write this.
